Suggestions on what to bring
Suggested Packing List for Your Trip
While you likely have your go-to packing essentials, I recommend bringing a few extra items to enhance your experience on this journey.
Medical
* Vaccination card
— and / or documentation proving you are vaccinated for yellow fever
Camera Gear
This workshop stands out because it combines trekking, safaris, and landscapes, requiring thoughtful selection of your photography gear.
I typically bring the following:
* Camera body (2 would be best, one for a backup or a different lens setup)
* Lenses that cover wide angle for the landscape all the way to telephoto for the safaris
* Landscape “accessories” like: Tripod, Filters, Shutter release cables
* Lens cleaner / wipes (we are in the rainforest)
Gorilla Trekking Essentials:
We’ll be incredibly close to the Gorillas—often within 15 feet! With this in mind, it's best to carry a minimal, carefully chosen selection of gear.
My setup for the Gorilla’s is:
* Camera body x2
* Lens (1): 24-70 f2.8
* Lens (2): 70-200 f2.8
—- Why 2.8? The Gorillas like to congregate in well shaded areas and the 2.8 will provide you the chance to keep your iso set as low as possible
* Camera rain cover (we are in the rainforest and you have a chance to experience the namesake)
—- Personally I use a lightweight, no frills dry bag - the kind used for kayaking or snorkeling…. but I’ve also been known to use a Ziplock or re-sealable bag that you find at the grocery store. Remember, this is to protect your equipment from the elements like rain, mist, branches, and dirt (if you drop your camera)
* Porters, as a reminder, the park offers the opportunity to hire a local porter to carry your equipment for the day. These porters are reasonably priced and they are locals so you know that your money will go to a good cause.
* Some things I would NOT carry, unless there is a specific need:
* Tripod / Monopod, these are animals, and they move around so this wonderful piece of equipment will slow you down.
My setup for the rest of the trip:
* Lens (3) 15-35 - Landscape lens
* Lens (4) Safari lens - As long a lens as you can afford or carry
—- I find that a 500mm is a wonderful focal length
Computer
* Computer to cull through the day’s images. We will have a regular reviewing session in the evening to see everyone’s best images.
* This is not a Post processing workshop, however I’m sure we’ll work on some images together
Clothing
* Hiking gear (Boots, light weight pants for hiking in the jungle, Ankle gators are a nice to have, Long sleeve thin shirt, rain jacket)
* Light jacket for early morning safari’s
Gear SnapAdventures will for the workshop attendees
* Bug spray
* Suntan lotion
